Fashion show production in Toronto
Runway lighting, sound and staging, run cue to cue with a technician who has counted models out of a backstage before.
A runway is a lighting problem first. If the clothes do not read on camera, nothing else you spent money on matters.
From $2,800 · Runway build, lighting, sound and operation
- High-CRI front light, no colour on the clothes
- Cue stack built and rehearsed
- Runway, drape and backdrop from one crew
- Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan
Lighting the runway
Front light at a high enough angle to keep shadows off the face, no colour on the garments unless the designer asks for it, and even coverage from the top of the walk to the end mark. The most common mistake in this city is a beautiful moody wash that makes every dress look grey in the photos.
Standard runway rig: 40 ft walk
- Front
- 6–10× LED profile or fresnel, 45°, 4000–5000K, high CRI
- Backlight
- 4× wash for separation from the backdrop
- End mark
- 2× dedicated fixtures at the turn, where the photographers are
- Control
- Lighting desk with cue stack, operated live
- Sound
- 2–4 tops flown or on sticks, sub under the runway head
- Comms
- Headset between backstage, front of house and the show caller
Sound and the show call
Music for a runway is a timed edit, not a playlist. Each segment is cut to the number of looks and the pace of the walk, with a tail long enough to cover a late model and short enough that the room does not sag.
We build the cue stack with you in advance and rehearse it once with real timing. Ten minutes of rehearsal removes most of what goes wrong.
The build
Runway platform, backdrop, and the step-and-repeat everyone photographs on the way in. Staging and flooring, drape and step-and-repeat all come from us, which means one load-in and one crew.
Check your date
The first question is always whether the date is open. Start there: the rest takes two minutes.
Common questions
Do you build the runway as well as light it?
Yes. Decking, skirt, backdrop and step-and-repeat. One supplier, one load-in, one crew.
How much does a fashion show cost to produce in Toronto?
From $2,800 for lighting, sound and operation in a venue that already has power and a room. A full build with runway, drape and screens is typically $8,000 to $20,000.
Can you match a designer's lighting reference?
Usually. Send the reference early. Some looks that photograph well were shot with lighting that cannot exist in a room with an audience in it, and it is better to know that in advance.
Do you provide a show caller?
We provide the technical operator and the comms. A show caller who knows the collection is normally yours, and we work to them.
